Fujairah Cruise Port Guide
Cruise ships dock at the Port of Fujairah, a significant container and oil transfer port. A complimentary shuttle service is provided to transfer you from the ship to the main port gate. Fujairah's town center is approximately 5 miles away. From the port, you'll witness an impressive sight of at least 50 large tankers offshore, waiting for oil transfers.
Fujairah is uniquely situated on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, outside the Gulf, facing the Indian Ocean. It offers a landscape of contrasts, with wide sandy beaches set against the rugged Hajar mountains. The emirate is developing with new luxury hotels and tourist facilities, yet it strives to preserve its cultural heritage and tranquility.
Important Cultural Notes: If your visit coincides with Ramadan, Muslims observe fasting from daybreak to sunset. Non-Muslims are respectfully asked to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in the presence of Muslims during these hours. Alcohol service in hotel restaurants is typically restricted until after sunset. Ladies should dress modestly, ensuring trousers or skirts cover the knees, and that cleavage and upper arms are not exposed.
Getting Around from the Port
From the main port gate, taxis are readily available.
- Taxi to Town Center: The town center is 5 miles away, and a taxi ride costs approximately 10 euro.
- Taxi to Khor Fakkan: This beach town, 12 km away, can be reached by taxi for about 20 euro. There are no attractions or facilities directly around the port itself, so transport is necessary to explore.
Attractions and Activities
Given the 8-10 hours in port, here are some options:
- Beach Day at Khor Fakkan: Head to Khor Fakkan, a beach town in the Emirate of Sharjah, located about 12 km (7.5 miles) from the port. A taxi ride costs around 20 euro. Important Note: As Sharjah is a more conservative emirate, western-style bathing suits are not permitted on its public beaches.
- Desert Dune Safari: Experience the unique desert landscape with a jeep tour into the sand dunes. This type of excursion is typically best arranged through your cruise line or a local tour operator.
- Explore Ancient Forts: The region boasts ancient fortresses perched on rocky hilltops and other historical sites. For convenience and deeper exploration of these spots, a cruise line organized tour is often the most practical option. It's advisable to compare these offerings with any independent local tours.
Dining
While no specific restaurants are mentioned directly at the terminal, options for local cuisine and international fare will be available in the town center and at the various resorts.
Safety
- Ramadan Observance: During Ramadan, respect local customs by avoiding eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours, especially in the presence of Muslims. Alcohol service is restricted to after sunset.
- Modest Dress: Women should dress modestly, ensuring knees, cleavage, and upper arms are covered. This is important throughout the UAE, and particularly in more conservative areas like Sharjah if you visit Khor Fakkan.
- Beachwear in Sharjah: Be aware that western-style bathing suits are not permitted on the beaches of Sharjah.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED), often abbreviated as dhs. The Dirham is pegged to the US Dollar. While Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken and serves as the lingua franca across the emirates.
